Today was quite a day. I went to a refresher course on Quickbooks. BORING! I guess I would never be able to be an accountant. It was great to get back to my own work after the course.

How to Motivate Employees - what are your experiences? As some of you know, I am more interested in long term solutions to motivating employees rather than quick fixes that last briefly. I have had many interesting experiences with employees over the years in moving them from unmotivated to motivated. I had even had a few that resisted strongly at first and later thanked me for making them toe the line. What have your experiences been in motivating employees? Have you ever made an employee toe the line? Has anyone thanked you for making them toe the line especially after stubbornly resisting initially?

I had one employee thank me for making him grow up when I held his feet to the fire. He was nearly 40 years old at the time and he did change and was more mature and a better employee.

Another employee resisted hard during an hour or so of my counseling him toward motivation even to the point of threatening to go "postal"and then turn and thank me and tell me he needed that (my leaning on him) and thanked me for doing it and then said he would become my best employee. To which I said, "Make my day". By the way he did become my best producer and all around best employee in many ways and for stayed that way for many years after our "discussion" until he retired and we grew to respect each other on a deeper level for many years.

I had another employee who had lost the ability to do quality work. I counseled him for months to correct that but he was not able to change so he had to leave. However, he thanked me for giving him a chance to improve and we parted on friendly terms.
